Kate Whitmore Photography | Modern. Unique. Captivating. bio picture

Oh, hello!

Thanks for visiting the Kate Whitmore Photography blog.  It's so good to see you here!

I'm Kate, a wedding & lifestyle photographer living in Columbus, Georgia.  I reside in a cute little apartment with my husband, my support, and the force behind me becoming the awesome photographer I want to be--Brett.   He also serves as my incredible assistant and the best 3rd & 4th eyes I could ask for when it comes to shooting.

Craving a little more about us?
-We love The Office.
-Sunday naps make us happy.
-We like to dance ridiculously when riding in the car.
-We are originally from the great state of Tennessee.
-We hate making the bed.
-Our idea of a date night is dinner, ice cream, & hanging out at home with a good movie (or The Office).
-You will hear us quoting FRIENDS almost daily.

To set up a coffee date for more photography info or just to hang out, please shoot us an email by clicking the 'contact' tab above.

Because some things need an explanation

I grew up as Samantha Kate Nabors.
My nickname is Katie.
(And for the first couple years of my life, it was Kati, without an E. I think it’s pretty rad. So rad that when I was in middle school, I tried to change it back. My teachers weren’t too thrilled with that so it didn’t last long.)

I’m sure you are asking “How in the world is Katie a nickname for Kate?”
Well, you aren’t the first to ask. But honestly, I have no idea. I do know that I love it though. I’m so glad that my parents weren’t afraid to be different in the 80s.

The problem I always had though? The first of the school year with new teachers.
“Samantha Nabors?!” My eyes would roll when I heard that name called. I just don’t see myself as a Samantha. I would tell the teacher I go by Katie, which would often be followed by a confused look from the teacher before she would go on to the next name. And there was almost always a teacher that would follow up with a snide comment about how that’s technically not even in my name. EVERY. YEAR.

When I got engaged and decided I was going to officially start a photography business, I decided KATE was the better choice. It’s a little more grown-up, more professional, and it sounds so much more sophisticated with my new last name. So I changed my facebook profile name. I used that name in my classes. Might as well get used to it and just use it across the board, right? However, it didn’t help. In fact, I’m almost positive it confused people even more. People who were very very close to me asked if I wanted them to call me Kate. (and if you are still one of those people who are wondering, please call me Katie).

Then we moved to Columbus, Georgia. I just knew it would be easier. I could be Kate Whitmore. All the time. I would be Kate Whitmore, the photographer, and I would be Kate Whitmore, that new girl. It would be great.
WRONG.
When we meet new people and my husband calls me Katie, they get really confused. And several of them have even asked what I want to be called, which must be followed up with an explanation of my name.
When I go to a restaurant that asks for my name and I say “Kate,” it is 75% of the time followed up with “I’m sorry. Did you say Katie?” Odd, right?

So the point of this rambling post that I said would be brief? First, to alleviate a little confusion. And also to let you inside my quaint little life. Just a tad. My photography is only a small part of me, and I want you to see the rest. Even if it is just about the confusion of my name.

[and just a little sidenote: the name Samantha came from the little girl on Who's the Boss? How awesome is that?]

March 6, 2010 - 12:38 am Kristi - Umm... so how come I had NO CLUE that we spelled your name Kati? I feel like as someone two years and eleven months older, I would remember this, but I do not.

March 6, 2010 - 1:14 am Kate - Hence why PawPaw STILL writes my name that way. Seriously. I'm not kidding. I'm sure I can find a recent letter to prove it.

1. purchase a gallery wrap from our wedding

Since our wedding, B & I have really been wanting to purchase a gallery wrap with one of our amazing portraits by Armosa Studios.

Yes, our wedding was a year ago. But being a newlywed AND a college graduate in this awful economy hasn’t been easy on the ‘let’s spend all of our money on our wedding pictures’ fund. (Because, trust me, I totally would have done it).
However, prior to our first anniversary, we decided that we just couldn’t wait any longer for the very piece of art that we have been drooling over. And we did it. We purchased one.

Without further ado, I would like to introduce you to the new masterpiece that has graced our living room wall. Thank you Armosa Studios & Happy Anniversary to us!

That’s one thing crossed off the 101 in 1001 list!

Kate.

March 5, 2010 - 12:38 pm Joy - It's beautiful! and I like that you crossed number 1 off first. haha

Love Story.

February 28, 2009 was by the far the best day of my life. I married my best friend.
But what amazes me is the ridiculously awesome days we have had ever since. And the feelings I had on the day that I married Brett Whitmore are even stronger now than they were 12 months ago. I thank God for him every single day. I get excited that he is my husband every single day. And I feel like I am so so lucky that he loves me too…every single day.

As part of our relaxing and oh-so-nice first anniversary celebration, we used very little technology. And since I didn’t schedule a blog post for yesterday, i’m posting now. March 1, 2010. The 366th day we’ve been married.

After a pancake breakfast at noon, a little shopping, and chicken in the hut for dinner (a must-have recipe that I’ll share soon!), we began to pack up our vows and the Bible and made our way down to Flat Rock Park. In a peaceful place, we read our vows again. We talked about our last year of marriage making bullet points of the awesome times and the rough times, and then we set goals for ourselves over the next year. It makes me so excited to know I have married a man who has incredible ambitions and who wants the best in our marriage. And although we write all of this down for US, we also write it down for our kids. I can’t wait until the day that they sit down to read our love story.

(Please take notice of the fondant practically dripping off the cake. 1-year-old fondant is a disaster.)

Kate.

oh and also- i got the best gift ever. really. which i’ll share with you next weekend!

March 2, 2010 - 10:30 am Brittany - This is so sweet, totally gave me goosebumps. Congrats on your one year anniversary! And great, just great... now I am going to wonder about the gift - thanks, thanks a lot - can't wait to hear about it!

The First Dance | 10 Days of Love

Brett & I love to laugh together. And when we dance, we tend to laugh constantly.
Our wedding day was no different. Although we had a sweet song to sway to (“God Must Love U” by Babyface), we couldn’t be still long enough.

all images by Armosa Studios

We easily feel awkward when there are so many people watching us. (In fact, all of the nerves from our wedding day arose from the fact that we knew 400+ eyes would be looking at us).
We felt so awkward at this point that it felt as if we were the nerd 8th graders at a dance. And we were the only ones dancing.
So to fit the way we felt, we danced…well, like 8th graders.

And here’s my husband doing one of his favorite dances. He calls it “6 inches apart” and got it from the movie Hitch.

You have stolen my heart | 10 Days of Love

I’m glad to say that even a year after our wedding (or 357 days), I still tear up when I hear the song I walked down the aisle to. The moment the doors in the back of the church opened and I saw Brett waiting for me was one of the greatest moments of my life. And when I hear that special moment in the song when the doors did open, I get chills.

Here it is. The song that will be one of my favorite songs of all time because it reminds me of the moment I pledged my life to someone that I’m so madly in love with.

February 23, 2010 - 1:00 pm Courtney - This just brought tears to my eyes. {love.love.love.}

**********************************

About a month ago, I saw Jessica Claire’s 101 in 1001. And I personally thought it was a much better way to set and record goals than New Year’s Resolutions ever could be.
So I started my own. A ‘to-do’ list of 101 things that I would like to do in 1001 days. Although I started it halfway through January, I’m counting January 1, 2010 as the first day of this list. Which means the 1001st day would be September 27, 2012.

That sounds so far away. But just enough time for me to complete part of my bucket list.
And then I’ll start it all over again!

For you guys to check out what I’d like to do in the next 1001, here it is.
I urge you to do this too! If you do, leave a comment and link to your list!

And because a post is not complete without a picture…
Brett & I took another one together last week. At least we’re doing better with that in 2010 than we did in 2009!
So glad I get to spend the next 1001 (plus thousands more) days with this man.

-KW.

Josephine | LaGrange, Georgia Children’s Photographer

Josephine just makes my heart happy. She has the sweetest little face, gorgeous eyes, and a presence that just makes me melt. Her preciousness (yep, I said preciousness) puts her at the top of the charts for my favorite session ever! Such a great session that Brett probably couldn’t count how many times I have squealed out of happiness over the last few days while editing her pictures.

Without further ado, enjoy the images!
-KW.

6 months

On August 1, 2009, B & I moved to Columbus, Georgia.
Yesterday marked 6 months since we have been here.

And it must be showing because I drove home from work without having to think about where I was supposed to turn. Completely subconscious.
It was a big day for me. & a nice way to [accidentally] celebrate 6 months.

Ah, the sibling love.

This weekend, Brett & I braved the Nashville snow to see our family. That’s a story for a completely different post.
For now, I wanted to share this picture. It has zero snow in it. But it was taken while there was tons of snow & ice covering the Smyrna ground, and we had a chance to hang out with the oh-so-fun Stew kids.

Emery: Hey Bradley, look into this light.
Bradley looks. I mean, what 3-year old doesn’t listen to his older sister?
Parker takes a picture.

And this is the result.

The most hilarious part about this?
-Emery did NOT know a speedlight leave white splotches in your eyes when you look at it. (Brett can tell you so…I don’t know how many times he has been looking in my direction when I’m shooting & the flash goes off RIGHT in his face).
-Parker did not take a picture BECAUSE Bradley looked into the light. She just happened to click at the perfect moment.
-IT DID NOT PHASE BRADLEY! I mean, look at this! Surely this would blind anyone else. But not Bradley…he’s invincible. He’d probably tell you so, too (but with a 3-year old’s vocabulary…which is way cuter than using a word like invincible).

Leah & Ryan | Nashville, Tennessee Engagement Photographer

I love when I’m around two people who are so completely in love.
Leah & Ryan are, without a doubt, madly in love. I can’t wait to tell the story of their wedding day.

Enjoy.
-KW.
